Level Select (Sonic & Knuckles only)
When you're in Mushroom Hill Zone, find an elevator pump to hang off of and press the following while hanging: Left, Left, Left, Right, Right, Right, Up, Up, and Up. If you did it correctly you will hear a chime. Pause the game and then hold the A button to be taken back to the title screen. Now highlight any character you wish, but be sure to keep holding the A button and then press the start button. You will then be taken to the level select area.
Level Select (Locked-On to Sonic 3)
When you are at Angel Island Zone Act 1, go to a swing that you can hang from. While Sonic is swinging, press the following Left, Left, Left, Right, Right, Right, Up, Up, and Up. You should hear a chime if you entered the code correctly. Pause the game and hold the A button to be taken back to the title screen. Now press down twice to go to the Sound Test menu. If you enter level select as Knuckles then you can access the Death Egg Zone. Act 1 is impossible to beat since you cannot jump as high as Sonic, unless you have game genie and the right code.
Level Select (Locked-On to Sonic 2)
When playing with the Sonic 2 cartridge locked-on, enter the following at the title screen: Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, and Right. If done right you should hear a chime. Now hold the A button and press the Start button to go to level select.
Debug Mode (Locked-On to Sonic 3)
You first have to have the level select code activated. Now choose to go to Mushroom Hill and grab one of the elevator pumps and press: Left, Left, Left, Right, Right, Right, Up, Up, and Up. If you did it right you should hear a chime. Pause the game and press the A button to reset the game. This time when you go to the level select menu and hold down the A button when you choose your Zone.
A button = Changes highlighted item
B button = Toggles between items and Sonic
C button = Places highlighted item
Debug Mode (Locked-On to Sonic 2)
You must first activate the level select code. Now in the new sound test menu, play the following sounds: 01, 09, 09, 04, 01, 00, 01, and 08 (It's the same as the release date for Sonic and Knuckles). If you entered it correctly you will hear a chime. Hold down the A button when you select your Zone.

B button = Toggles between items and Knuckles
C button = Places highlighted item
All Seven Emeralds (Locked-On to Sonic 2)
First activate the level select code. Now play the following sounds in the new sound test area: 01, 06, 07, 07, 07, 02, 01, and 06. If entered correctly you should hear a the Chaos Emerald chime. Now Knuckles has all seven of the Chaos Emeralds.
Secret Special Stages (Locked-On to Sonic 3)
You must first activate both the level select and the debug mode. Now once that is out of the way play sound 07 or 1F in the sound test menu, and then highlight either Special Stage 1 or Special Stage 2, and hold down the A button and press the Start button. When you clear the first stage you will earn a Chaos Emerald and the second stage to get a Super Emerald.
Hyper Sonic / Super Tails / Hyper Knuckles (Locked-On to Sonic 3)
You first must get all the chaos emeralds from the Sonic the hedgehog 3 levels. Once that is completed go to Mushroom Hill Zone. Once you start the Zone, Knuckles will come out of a secret hiding spot and close the door with a switch. Once he leaves go press the switch and enter the room. Now jump into the technicolour ring to be transported to an area where the Chaos Emeralds will change to a massive size, and will be gray in colour. Jump up towards one of them and you will be taken to the Blue Spheres special zone, where you must collect all the blue spheres. Hyper Knuckles is obtained basically the same way but you don't get the scene where Knuckles leaves the hidden room, duh.
